Kaguya-sama: Love is War (an alternative name is Kaguya Wants to be Confessed To: The Geniuses' War of Love and Brains, from the Japanese Kaguya-sama wa kokurasetai - Tensai-tachi no ren'ai zunōsen) is a Japanese seinen manga written and illustrated by Aka Akasaka. The series originally started in Miracle Jump (2015-2016) with a monthly cadence, then given its success it has been weekly published on Weekly Young Jump since 2016. The series is published in English by Viz Media. Moreover, an anime television series adaptation by A-1 Pictures recently premiered from January to March 2019.
The world of Kaguya-sama: Love is War is, however, even bigger. It includes two official spin-off manga launched in 2018 - Kaguya-sama o Kataritai (We Want to Talk About Kaguya) and Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Dōjin-ban Kaguya Wants to be Confessed to Official Doujin). Furthermore, a live-action film adaptation for the series is in production and the film is scheduled for premiere in Japan on September 6, 2019.
Considered a genius due to having the highest grades in the country, Miyuki Shirogane leads the prestigious Shuchiin Academy's student council as its president, working alongside the beautiful and wealthy vice president Kaguya Shinomiya. The two are often regarded as the perfect couple by students despite them not being in any sort of romantic relationship. However, the truth is that after spending so much time together, the two have developed feelings for one another; unfortunately, neither is willing to confess, as doing so would be a sign of weakness. With their pride as elite students on the line, Miyuki and Kaguya embark on a quest to do whatever is necessary to get a confession out of the other. Through their daily antics, the battle of love begins!
Kaguya Shinomiya is the main female character of the series. She is a student at Shuchi'in senior highschool and the vice president of the student council in the academy. She is a the daughter of the Shinomiya group and a multi-talented genius who can do anything if she sets her mind to it. Her family expectation made her always looks for ways she can use people for her and the Shinomiya family's benefit, without estabilishing other kinds of relationships. For this reason, when she falls in love with the president of the student council, she cannot admit her love for him and must make him fall in love and confess to her.
Miyuki Shirogane is the main male character of the series. He is a second year student in Shuchi'in senior highschool and the president of the student council. Shirogane is a diligent student who, despite his underprivileged background, climbed his way to the top of his class through hard work and determination. He is in love with Kaguya Shinomiya, but her wealth and talents greatly intimidate him, leaving him utterly terrified at the idea of confessing to her. He fears that all of his actions will lead Kaguya to look down him and to think how cute he is.
Chika Fujiwara is a student at Shuchi'in senior high school and the secretary of the student council in the academy. She is the only friend Kaguya Shirogane has had for years and one of the most important people in Shirogane's life - actually, without her help, he would never be able to learn new things. She is obsessed with anything that has to with love, professing herself as a "love detective" and giving relationship advice to others despite having never had a boyfriend before. Despite her several talents, she is considered as simple-minded by the other people because of her attitude.
Yu Ishigami is a freshman at Shuchi'in senior highschool and the treasurer of the student council in the academy. Ishigami is a reserved and gloomy student who would rarely show up to the student council meetings, preferring to do most of his work at home.; he normally spends most of his time playing video games by himself and he is particularly scared of Kaguya because he's convinced she is going to kill him - actually noy only him, but also Fujiwara. Moreover, he is generally be disliked by the other students... who knows if he will have a popularity moment and become a normie, at this rate. After all, how many girls could ever like him? He could never be the protagonist of an harem romantic comedy manga, actually.
Ai Hayasaka is a second year student in Shucin'in highschool and an employee of the Shinomiya family, witht he role of Kaguya's personal valet. She is able to completely change her personality according to the situations - at school she is a regular fashion girl, while at home she is completely dedicated to Kaguya. She always sacrifices everything to protect Kaguya and make her happy - which other girl, in the world, would need happiness and move more than Hayasaka?
Miko Iino is a freshman in Shucin'in highschool and the auditor of the student council in the academy. She has a strong will and a strong sense of justice, her obsession in doing whats right and correcting people who are doing the wrong led to her being bullied in school but she still stays strong and continues to uphold her idea of "right". Miko frequently butts heads with Ishigami, who is clearly the type of person she would absolutely never fall in love with. The person she ideally loves is the student from whom she received a letter and a pressed flower during a difficul period in her life - who ever will be this mysterious guy?
Kaguya-sama: Love is War is an extremely fun romantic comedy. While reading the series, a mix of different feelings will flow - you will laugh when Fujawara destroys all Kaguya and Shirogane's effort to make the other confess to, you will laugh when Shirogane is terrified by what Kaguya could tell him, you will laugh Ishigami leaves the council room because he is going to be killed by Kaguya (yes, you will laugh so much - almost in every chapter, something which is quite uncommon!), buy you will also be moved and cry when...
Well, if I tell you why, at that point why to read the manga?
However, the main reason for which you should try to read it is that this series is really cute.
