Kingdom Hearts is a series known for a great many things, namely its foundation of being a collaboration of Disney and Final Fantasy characters. But as the series has grown, it is arguable it has become just as loved for its wonderfully...intricate plot. And yet despite that, it's filled with great characters that make the journey worth it.

But in a game series about combining Disney and Final Fantasy, you can't possibly expect there to be moments that don't exude surrealism, and the Kingdom Hearts series has that in spades.

Updated June 26th, 2024 by Hilton Webster: It's fair to say that Kingdom Hearts is a memorable series, from its beloved characters to playful interpretations of Disney movies. Yet even with all of that under its belt, it's how damn quotable the games are that have really cemented its long-running popularity.

13 "I Do Know Hurt."

Sora

Despite Sora not really aging all that much over the last 20 years, he has gone through his fair share of heartbreak, at times more literally than metaphorical. Plenty of others are linked with and dwell within his heart and he shares their pain.

When he first returns to Twilight Town in Kingdom Hearts 3, he questions if he truly is able to handle the emotional weight of his journey. "I do know hurt," he claims, seemingly uncertain of his own pains. Yet as Sora claims, to hurt is to show you care. Because that's what Kingdom Hearts is — the hurt of a separated heart that yearns to be together again.

12 "I'm Already Half-Xehanort!"

Xigbar

Kingdom Hearts has a reputation for what we'll call unconventional storytelling. Everything is a surprise twist and a cliffhanger that feels like the story somehow never has substance, yet has also laid the groundwork for all these surprises. It's a bizarre one. But nothing quite like Xigbar.

Xigbar has always stood out from the other members of Organization 13, especially with his (surprise) twist ending in Kingdom Hearts 3. With him announcing he's already half-Xehanort as the camera dramatically zooms in on his yellow eye and pointed ears is something so stupid yet obvious you can't help but remember it.

11 "My Friends Are My Power!"

Sora

From the very first Kingdom Hearts game comes this quote, and maybe the most iconic across the whole series. The original game revolves plenty around the idea of who is the true wielder of the Keyblade, and what defines one as such. After reaching Hollow Bastion, Riku gains the keyblade, with Donald and Goofy to guide him, leaving Sora unarmed with only Beast.

As he adventures though, Donald and Goofy return to his side, with Sora realizing his true power comes not from the Keyblade, but from his power and the bonds they share. The Keyblade returns to him then, proving him to be the most worthy of it. It's a moment that set the basis for Sora as a character for the many games to come.

10 "f*ckless Neophyte."

Xehanort

Master Xehanort is a major figure across the Kingdom Hearts series, core to just about, well, everything. His introduction in Birth By Sleep introduces him as an imposing villain, played by the great Leonard Nimoy. He's quite obsessed with the X-blade (pronounced key, like the Greek letter), shown prominently throughout the game.

But one of the most surreal lines he delivers is this. When trying to convince Ventus to give into his darkness to forge said X-blade, he refuses, instead being defeated by the summoned Heartless. Xehanort is disappointed, seemingly pulling out a thesaurus to find the right words to belittle Ventus with.

9 The Various Title Drops

Everyone At Some Point

Kingdom Hearts is known for its rather, well, unconventional titles. Chain of Memories, Birth by Sleep (and Birth By Sleep 0.2 A Fragmentary Passage), so it's no surprise then that the games at times have no shame in name-dropping themselves.

In Chain of Memories, a core theme of the story is that of manipulated memories, with Naminé facilitating this. But at a certain point, while explaining the intricacies of the plot, mentions being "bound by the chains of memories". The same is true at the end of Birth By Sleep when Aqua meets Ansem (the real one, not Xehanort) and he mentions that others are awaiting "their birth by sleep". Yeah.

8 "You're Stupid!"

Sora

It can be easy to forget over the decades having grown up with Kingdom Hearts that Sora hasn't grown with us, at least chronologically. His heart gets larger with every game, though his understanding of what's going on? Not so much. Sora is still a child, after all.

Which is why it's so powerful when he calls Riku stupid in the face of his shifting personality. It sounds like such a childish response because it is! Sora is a child, and the only way he can channel his upset at losing his two best friends is in harsh words.

7 "My Guess Is No One's Ever Loved You Before."

Woody

Of the many Kingdom Hearts worlds, Toy Story is one of the most beloved for its wondrous scale, quirky outfits, and the appearance of much loved Toy Story characters Woody and Buzz. The main villain of this world is Young Xehanort, one who aims to use the property of toys to create a vessel. Needless to say, the gang is confused.

Reaching the world's end, Buzz himself is taken captive by Young Xehanort and the darkness, with Sora and Woody quick in their attempt to rescue him. When they finally reach him, after Woody staunchly determines that he does not understand or care what Young Xehanort says, he says this quote, and even further claims that he has no friends. A toy telling you that you have no friends must be... destructive.

6 "Say Fellas, Did Somebody Mention The Door To Darkness?"

Mickey Mouse

In Kingdom Hearts 2, coupled with Sora's complete lack of understanding of what exactly a computer is, is the mystery of the Door to Darkness. It is a puzzle that baffles the party. Is it a metaphor? A literal description? None can say until a curious little fella overheard the conversation.

Of course, Mickey Mouse knows the answer. It's a computer password. There's just something so... baffling about it all. Why is he wearing those clothes? Why does he exactly know the answer? Why does he just stand there with a giant smirk like you want to look at him? This scene sums up Kingdom Hearts pretty well, honestly.

5 "Who Else Will I Have Ice Cream With?"

Roxas

This is a scene infamous and iconic in many ways similar to Tidus' laugh from Final Fantasy 10. 358/2 Days depicts Roxas' journey as a member of Organisation 13 and the mundanity that life brings. But his one reprieve after a day of work, is to sit atop the clock tower of Twilight Town and eat ice cream with his best friends, Axel and Xion.

However, Xion is revealed to be a device created to sap Roxas' power and memories, Axel is tasked with destroying her after she gains sentience, and finally, Xion challenges Roxas so that he might claim his power back and Sora can regain the memories. She dies in his arms, fading away while Roxas reminisces about the ice cream they shared. It's funny out-of-context, who would talk about ice cream to someone dying? But it's the context of it being the one time they were all happy together that makes the scene more heart-wrenching than it deserves to be.

4 "Got It Memorized?"

Axel

Axel is a fan-favourite character of Kingdom Hearts, first introduced in Chain of Memories with Organization 13. He was shown to be more mischievous than the others, going behind their back and playing something of his own game. Such a beloved character that the development team kept bringing him back.

But his "Got it memorized?" line is so iconic. Yes, because of the sass. But it's also central to his theme of loss. Sora's own memories are jumbled, Roxas never knew who he was, and Xion is just a dummy for absorbing other people's memories. He doesn't even really remember himself. He uses it as a quip, but it's really a kind of cry for help.

3 "When Was The Last Time Any One Of Us Felt Anything?"

Xemnas

Organization 13 is a funny bunch. Introduced in Chain of Memories and making a full appearance in Kingdom Hearts 2, they've had so many members come and go and come back again, be fully replaced, the full organization reform, and even have one organization exist just so that another could be made later. It's confusing.

And yet, every scene of them meeting in their exceedingly large room with exceedingly tall chairs is a masterpiece. A bunch of hooded characters with exaggerated voices talking as if they're all plotting against each other. But one of the most iconic is this line. It just oozes a timeless energy. It's plot-relevant because everything they say is, but there's such a comedic power to how it's delivered in this stupid room.

2 "Looks Like My Summer Vacation...Is Over."

Roxas

During Kingdom Hearts 2's opening, you play the role of Roxas instead of Sora. During this time, you are absorbed in Roxas' regular life, doing odd jobs and gathering up munny (no, that's not a mistake) so they can go on one final trip before their summer vacation ends.

But things start to get weird. These town mysteries feel like the curtain is being pulled back, oddities are occurring just out of eyesight. When it all starts to collapse and Roxas visits the large mansion and finally meets Sora. He doesn't understand everything, but this quote shows something of an understanding. That maybe he doesn't need to understand to know he's part of something bigger.

1 "The All-Powerful X-Blade!"

Xehanort

Core to the plot and Xehanort's plan is the X-blade, a keyblade that can summon the eponymous Kingdom Hearts. A particular quote was chosen here, from his explanation of the X-blade to Ventus (who also thinks he means Keyblade, by the way). But he says it so, so much.

The internet is plagued with Kingdom Hearts memes about the X-blade. It's incredible that Leonard Nimoy was able to say it with a serious tone in just about every scene he appeared in. And quite simply, the design is overly gaudy. You'd think the all-powerful X-blade would be more than two keyblades grafted together.
