Hermès possesses an impressive ability to breathe new life into classic designs, creating pieces that transcend passing trends. The Shoulder Birkin, once known as the JPG Shoulder Birkin in homage to its creator Jean-Paul Gaultier, has secured timeless classic status. As we witness its revival, this is an opportune moment to explore the history and evolution of this iconic bag.
Interestingly, this is not the only older style recently resurrected from the Hermès archives. We recently discussed the cherished Hermès handbags that we hoped would once again grace the shelves of the boutiques. Lo and behold, in an exciting turn of events, our wishes have been partially granted, as we welcome back both the Constance Elan and, now, the Shoulder Birkin.

Explore the heritage of the Shoulder Birkin, and its evolution into today’s offering from Hermès.
The story of the Hermès Shoulder Birkin begins with the creative genius of Jean-Paul Gaultier who assumed the role of creative director of womenswear, including leather goods in 2004. Originally known as the JPG Shoulder Birkin, this eye-catching bag first made its appearance in Jean-Paul Gaultier’s debut collection for the esteemed French fashion house, leaving a notable mark without overshadowing the classic Birkin.

The JPG Shoulder Birkin retained the design essence of the iconic Birkin, characterized by its top handles, and structured design. Gaultier in his innovative approach addressed some of the issues associated with the original Birkin. The traditional Hermès Birkin was designed for hand carry only, but Gaultier’s decision to extend the handles enabled the bag to be carried on the shoulder. Additionally, he elongated the width and shortened the height, ensuring that the bag fits comfortably under the arm. These modifications seamlessly transformed the Birkin into a more versatile bag, with a touch of casual elegance.
Produced from 2004 to 2013, the much coveted Shoulder Birkin swiftly captured the hearts of Hermès and handbag enthusiasts alike. In true Hermès fashion, the Shoulder Birkin was available in a vast array of colors, leathers, exotic skins, and even limited edition designs.
Doblis Suede added a touch of elegance, while denim and cord variations brought a casual yet chic vibe to the bag. For those seeking a more eye-catching style, exotic ostrich leather and shiny Porous crocodile brought the heat. Of course, you could also find the original JPG Shoulder Birkin in classic Hermès leathers such as Togo, and Clemence.
Original JPG Birkin in Denim & Leather
Hermès offered the original Shoulder Birkin in two popular sizes – 40 and 42. Although that may seem large, particularly when compared to the original Birkins 30 and 35, don’t picture a traditional Birkin 40 or a HAC. Remember, the Shoulder Birkin’s elongated design and reduction in height, allow the bag to retain a slim silhouette. As a result, the bag still appears balanced.

Jean-Paul Gaultier’s handbag innovations didn’t end with the Shoulder Birkin. In 2009, Gaultier tried his magic on the beloved Kelly, resulting in the reimagined Shoulder Kelly. This playful take on a classic boasts a similar stature and silhouette to the elongated Shoulder Birkin. However, the Shoulder Kelly distinguishes itself with a single lengthened top handle, an elegant nod to Kelly’s distinctive design. Of course, this design adaptation provided a fresh take on the timeless Kelly and added an extra layer of versatility. Gaultier’s interpretation of these Hermès icons not only paid homage to their timelessness but also offered a modern twist that attracted a cult following.

Unfortunately, both ‘Shoulder’ renditions have since been discontinued. However, all hope is not lost, as we now witness a revived design coming our way in the form of the ‘all-new’ Shoulder Birkin…
Although absent from and not foreshadowed at the Hermès Spring Summer 2024 fashion show, the Shoulder Birkin was a happy surprise at the season’s Objects Presentation. Immediately recognizable to anyone familiar with JPG’s creations, this version was a stunner. Created in deep indigo denim, with contrasting black swift leather flap and handles, it was finished with palladium hardware. Contemporary and classic . . . and a delight to welcome back to the Hermès bag lineup.

The juxtaposition of these contrasting fabric choices is certainly a departure from the original all-leather Birkin. However, this choice is certainly reminiscent of Jean-Paul Gaultier’s original Shoulder Birkin designs, paying homage to his unusual choice of fabrics. This twist adds a contemporary flair while preserving the timeless appeal of the Birkin.
Consistent with the original, the current rendition of the Shoulder Birkin retains its elongated silhouette and functional shoulder straps. However, the design itself appears more refined, with a much more rigid silhouette due to its denim construction.
While the resurgence of the Hermès Shoulder Birkin has sparked excitement within the luxury community, the precise details regarding its future variations remain subject to speculation. Hermès enthusiasts can’t help but wonder whether the bag will be released in a full leather variation, or perhaps alternative fabric options. Only time will tell . . .

Despite the excitement over the re-release of a Shoulder Birkin, not everyone was a fan of the original. So are you Team Shoulder Birkin or Team Classic Birkin? Of course, you can be on both. Let us know.

I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to the woman who commented on how she used DWOH to recover her bitcoin and return it to her wallet. Coincidentally, I experienced a similar issue and, after losing a total of $88,000 on a phony cryptocurrency investment platform, I felt compelled to contact them for assistance. Today, I can attest to their authenticity because, as I type this, I have my lost bitcoin back in my CoinBase wallet and am in tears of joy. Please get in touch with DWOH using the following information via Email Address: [emailprotected] OR Whats-App: +1 (803) 392-1735 if you’re having withdrawal issues, wish to recover, or want to confirm a website is legitimate before investing…..
Being scammed out of my cryptocurrency was a nightmare I never expected. I felt completely hopeless until I found Walldrive Cyber Security Service. Their team handled my case with great care and expertise. They were able to trace the transactions and retrieve my funds in a remarkably short period of time. The regular updates and clear communication throughout the process were very reassuring. Walldrive Cyber Security Service turned what seemed like an impossible situation into a successful recovery.
